Win 10/11 - Opening files in another program & changing the default file type

This article will explain how to change the default file type. An example of when you may wish to use this is when changing the program which you open PDFs in. The examples given are for a PDF but you may have a SMART file to select open with SMART


Opening as a one-time change:

To open in a different program as a one-time change, you should navigate to the file that you wish to open, then right click the file and hover over "Open with...."



You should then select the program that you with to open with.



Changing the default program:

To change the default program in which you open a file in, you should navigate to the file that you wish to open, then right click the file, and select Properties.


You should then select "change" and select the program which you wish to open the file type within. Once you have selected, don't forget to select "Apply", otherwise your selection will not save.



You should now be able to open your file in the specified program.
